The Project | To extend domestic waste collection services to approximately 30,000 households, in the un-serviced densely developed communities of Mafikeng Local Municipality, applying a domestic waste collection model, through a public partnership between the Department of Environment and Tourism and Mafikeng Local Municipality. The project is a national pilot project for extending waste services to address the backlog of un-serviced areas using an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) model
 
Progress to date: Linkd and Shisaka are Implementers for the project. Year 2 of the project ends in August 2011 and there are now 31,232 housholds receiving waste collection service.  Tedcor (Pty) Ltd has been appointed as the service provider who manage 5 SMEs who employ 70 workers have been successfully providing waste collection services under the EPWP. An independent evaluation of the pilot was conducted, covering the period from inception to date (one year). This evaluation has found that the project is on track towards meeting its goal and that it has made significant progress in relation to the identified objectives for the project. In addition, Linkd is currently supporting the municipality to implement a strategy for rendering tariffs in respect of the expanded service and to develop and implement a strategy to secure funds to pay for the service.
